Monitoring & Evaluation

Analysis of the impact on the businesses located in the streets intervened by the Program for the Promotion of Tourism in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo

The objective of the consultancy was to analyze the degree of temporary and/or permanent economic impact on the businesses located on the streets intervened by the Tourism Promotion Program of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, executed by the Government of the Dominican Republic, through the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

To meet these objectives, a comparative analysis was made of the costs generated to businesses during the closing of streets due to the remodeling work and the economic benefits that have been and will be generated in the coming years as a result of the increase in the arrival of visitors and tourists to the Colonial City. The costs generated by the remodeling works were calculated based on the information obtained through a survey applied to those responsible for all the businesses located on the streets intervened by the Program (86% response rate). The benefits were estimated from the increase in tourist spending in the Colonial City, generated by the increase in the number of tourists due to an improved tourist offer. Subsequently, an economic and financial evaluation was made of the impact of the remodelling works for the different types of businesses.
