Monitoring & Evaluation

Leveraging value chains, transforming landscapes to reduce deforestation

The purpose of the consultancy was to undertake the mid-term evaluation of the Agreement between Earthworm Foundation and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), which covers four (4) different programmes in three countries: Brazil, Indonesia and Peru.
The review evaluated the progress of the following four initiatives:
1. The Landscapes Programme: A multi-stakeholder approach to create resilient, thriving communities and ecosystems in biodiversity hotspots under threat from expanding agriculture.
2. Rurality: Farmers are seen as entrepreneurs who sometimes lack the tools to realise their vision. So, a business-minded approach is taken to working with them to develop their skills, their connections and their resilience; improving their livelihoods in the process.
3. Centre of Social Excellence: CSE trains recent graduates and professionals to implement good social management techniques in their work. Focusing on under-served geographies where there is a higher risk of social conflict, CSE’s goal is to cultivate local expertise in building and embedding holistic social management programmes into company, government and NGO operations.
4. Kumacaya: A truly independent verification process, Kumacaya supports a network of civil society actors and community members located in key sourcing countries. Through these “eyes on the ground,” faster, more accurate data collection is facilitated on how responsible sourcing commitments are being implemented.
The evaluation was intended to help Earthworm Foundation and Norad better understand the project’s continued relevance, overall effectiveness, and impact to-date. In addition, the evaluation showed how processes and procedures can be streamlined to increase the capacity to create long-lasting transformation for people and nature.
